Selah - June 19, 2008 - “Slow Down and Be Still”
Are you having some difficulty finding time to slow down and just be still? It seems that life is getting busier, but I am not sure it is anymore productive. I believe the Psalmist was having a similar problem. Psalm 46:10 instructs us this way, “Be still and know that I am God!”
God inspired David to write some wonderful words of instruction that happen to say much the same to us. “Be still in the presence of the Lord, and wait patiently for Him to act.” How often do we get caught up with modern living and want everything or anything to happen instantly. We often find ourselves doing that with God, yet He so graciously reminds us in His Word to be careful not to do that, especially with Him.
As I took God’s challenge to be still in His presence, He showed me something to share with all of you. It happens to be from Psalm 37:1-11. In these few verses we discover what “Our Part” is and what “God’s Part” is. What a great God we have the privilege to enjoy time with. His instructions are not confusing or complicated.
Let me show you what I mean. If you would take your Bible and read this passage you will see several things. By the way, I used the New Living Translation more than any other.
“Our Part” will be found in words like: trust in the Lord and do good; live safely in the land and prosper or feed on His faithfulness (NKJV); take delight in the Lord or enjoy Him; commit everything you do to he Lord; be still in the presence of the Lord and wait patiently for Him to act; don’t worry or fret; stop being angry; turn from your rage; do not lose your temper. The list is not long or really hard. I say this because when you compare what “God’s Part” is, you’ll find it worth it all.
Let me show you what I mean. “God’s Part” provides safety and causes us to prosper; He will help you; He will give you the desires of your heart; He makes your innocence or your righteousness (NIV) radiate like the dawn; justice of your cause will shine like the noonday sun; He promises to act; He gives the land as our inheritance; and He finishes with giving us peace and prosperity. That is some list, and I believe it is worth having. How about you? It’s your choice!
So take some time for you and God as soon as you can. You too will find it to be a treasured possession for you as many others have discovered.
SELAH: think on these things
